How To Ferment Mushrooms

The deeper I delve deep into the fermenting world, the more I start realizing that you can pretty much ferment anything you want. I once thought that fermenting honey garlic or fermenting cinnamon apples was weird. I have since discovered that you can actually ferment mushrooms too, hey who knew?

Well, one reason I love fermented recipes over say canning recipes, is how simple they are. There are no complicated tools and manuals to read and try to make sense off. Of course, if you want to be fancy you can buy the fermenting jars, but any old mason jar will do. You just have to be prepared for a little more work during the fermentation process.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • mushrooms
  • fresh thyme
  • fresh marjoram
  • garlic
  • sea salt
  • whey, sauerkraut juice, or culture starter
  • filtered water

The process is simple really, the only thing that may slow you down is the number of jars you will be fermenting. Obviously the more jars you have, the longer the whole process will take. It is merely a matter of packing everything into the jar, and then leaving your jars out to ferment. If all goes according to plan your mushrooms should have fermented in about 72 hours.
