My dear hubby would argue, that it is not always about me, but this post will surely prove him wrong. For starters, we presently do not have any horses on the homestead, and are not even talking about getting any. However, I was so sure someone else would find this post on how to build a round pen useful.
I understand that round pens are used mostly for training the horses. What I like about these plans are that they are very cost effective. As with most projects, you are always encouraged to only buy materials that cannot be salvaged from around the homestead. By doing this you can drastically reduce the cost of any project that you undertake.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- landscape timbers
- quikrete or concrete
- treated 2x6x8s
- treated 1x4x8s
- 1x4x8s
- gate hinges
- gate latch
- posthole digger
- handheld drill
- wood screws or nails
- string or twine
- measuring tape
- spirit level
When it comes to size, you can make your round pen whatever size you want. Simply pound a stake into the ground, tie some string to it and then mark out the circumference of your pen by walking around in a circle. The main support posts should be at least 18 inches deep, level and reinforced by concrete.
Use the post digger for digging the holes at equal intervals around the pen. You build your pen, working from the bottom to the top with the bottom 2x6s providing extra reinforcement for the whole structure. Ideally, you should add a middle row and then a top a row. Don’t forget to leave out a section for your gate, the gate supports should also be reinforced.
