Homemade Sour Cream

Don’t you hate it when you try making one of your favorite recipes and then you realize that you are missing an essential ingredient. This is why in the past I have shared stuff like how to make homemade coconut whipped cream and even homemade buttermilk recipe on this blog. You may want to save this homemade sour cream recipe too, just in case you need it one day.

Actually I tend to prefer the homemade recipes instead of going to buy these basic common ingredients at my local grocery store. Not only is it cheaper, it is also healthier and safer. This particular recipe requires 3 ingredients only and a mason jar. The fresh lemon juice is responsible for giving the sour cream its acidic flavor. You can substitute the lemon juice with white vinegar or even leave out the milk. This recipe makes 2 cups.

Homemade Sour Cream Recipe

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
  • mason jar
  • paper towel
  • elastic band
  • spoon

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1.

Pour your cream into the mason jar.

Step 2.

Squeeze in some fresh lemon juice and mix well

Step 3.

Add the milk to the jar and screw on the lid.

Step 4.

Give the jar a real good shake to mix all the ingredients together.

Step 5.

Unscrew the lid and cover the jar with the paper towel. Use an elastic band to hold it in place.

Leave the jar to sit out at room temperature or in a cool dry spot for at least 24 hours. This will give the cream enough time to thicken and also acquire that sour taste. The sour cream will separate during this time, you will end up with the cream at the top and water at the bottom of the jar. Simply mix everything together once again before use. Store in your fridge and use within 14 days.
