What came first the chicken or the egg? The baby chick of course! LOL. I know that was a corny joke but it did at least give you a little chuckle. We have looked at how to make homemade organic chicken feed and homemade fermented chicken feed, in previous post. Today let us look at how to make this homemade organic baby chick starter feed recipe.
We always try to give our chickens homemade organic feed, and this is no different for the baby chicks. This recipe has quite a long list of healthy ingredients, however it is very possible that you maybe missing one or two. In which case it is okay to leave them out. When using the quantities as stated in the recipe, you will end up with about a gallon of feed. If you need to make a larger batch simply use the same ratios i.e. double or triple your quantities.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- organic hull-less oats
- organic wheat
- organic split green peas or organic field peas
- organic (shelled) sunflower seeds
- organic or wild caught fish meal (optional)
- blackstrap molasses
- organic kelp
- brewer’s yeast
- egg
- fresh grass, spinach, dark lettuce or kale
The first step is to mix the grains with the molasses. It is recommended that you work in a separate bowl mixing with a fork until your grains are well coated. You will also add the kelp and yeast before returning everything back to the original bucket. Now if your feed is still powdery, then you may want to process it further using either a food processor or a blender.
Just be careful not to over process the feed, and end up with a flour like consistency. Since our eggs are always fresh from the farm, we tend to use them raw. If yours are not then it is recommended that you boil them. As for the greens, just use whatever is available in the garden at that time of the year. The greens and the egg should only be added to the feed on the actual day of feeding.
