There are many benefits to introducing homemade fermented feed to your chickens. For starters, numerous studies have shown that your chickens become more resistant to diseases and bacteria. When it comes to the feed itself they will tend to eat less feed when you ferment it, thus saving you money on feed in the long run. Various other nutrients are released by the fermentation process such as Niacin, Riboflavin, Vitamin B, Folic Acid as well as Thiamin.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1.

Add the dry grain to the bucket.

Step 2.

Fully cover all the grain with the water.

Step 3.

Add the whey to kickstart the fermentation process. (Optional)

Step 4.

Loosely cover the bucket and let it sit at room temperature in your shed.

Step 5.

Starting from the bottom, stir the mixture every single day for the next 3 to 4 days.

Step 6.

When ready, strain the mixture to seperate the grain from the liquid.

The grain should always be fully covered throughout this whole process, always make sure you add more water if needed, as the grain may absorb the water. You know the feed is ready when it has a sourdough like sour smell. The strained liquid can be re-used to make the next batch. Feed your chickens the fermented grains only.

Apple cider vinegar can be added to the fermenting feed in circumstances where the feed starts to smell more like alcohol. The acetic acid in the vinegar should be able to eat up the alcohol. Throw away any moldy or rancid smelling fermented feed. If you only have a few chickens you can use a smaller container such as a large glass bowl or even a half gallon jar, instead of the plastic bucket.
