Whether we like it or not, the reality of the current situation is that our duck population has increased on the homestead. Initially we built this diy duck house from scrap, and a few months back added the diy pond with water filter. Now I am looking at adding new living quarters, this diy cable spool duck house is high on the list.
I have heard of people recycling these cable spools into chicken coops, but this was a first for duck houses. If you are lucky you can get one of these cable spools for free from electric companies, phone companies as well as cable TV providers. Most of the other required materials are readily available at any local hardware store. Except for the wood pallets, which should be free too.

- galvanized drywall screws
- filler
- paint
- varnish
- hinges

- circular saw
- jigsaw
- handheld drill
- hole saw drill bits
- screwdriver
- chisel (optional)
- vice grips
- socket wrench
- sander
- paint brush
- marker
- tape measure
The spool has to be taken apart before you begin building your duck house. Unscrew the main bolts that hold it together. Use the drill and hole saw drills to create new holes for the washers, followed by holes for the bolts themselves.With the holes drilled, you should check to make sure that all your measurements were correct, and the spool can be reassembled.
The door is the next thing to be tackled, before attaching it to the spool and adding all the hardware. The outside may require a little sanding and a coat of paint. Any gaps that may need filling should get the appropriate treatment. Lastly, a ramp made from pallet wood for the ducks entrance way, to make it easier for them to enter their new digs.
