Fermented Carrots Recipe

Fermented foods are not for everyone. It took me a while to acquire the taste and even up to now one of my daughters still does not like anything fermented. That has not stopped me from making everything from fermented lemons to fermented grapefruit juice recipe. My friend Suzie sent me this fermented carrots recipe, which I tried last week for the first time.

Thinking about the health benefits of fermented foods, especially the probiotics aspect helps push you to stick to them until you start to love them. The process itself is usually super simple, for example this recipe only requires 2 ingredients. There is no special equipment required either, just a little bit of patience whilst you wait for the fermentation to take place.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

The brine is the first thing that I made. All it took was mixing some warm water and sea salt in the bowl and mixing for a few minutes until everything dissolved. Then I washed, peeled and stripped my carrots. Although you can slice them into ‘coins’, I prefer stripping mine instead. For my first batch, I left out the optional herbs, but feel free to add them to yours.

With the carrots prepped, the next step was to pack them in the jars. As recommended, I left about an inch of headspace, before pouring in the warm brine. Be sure to wipe the rim, before you screw on the plastic lid. How long you let the jar sit, depends on the taste. I usually let my jars sit for at least 2 days, before initially tasting the ‘brew’.
