Why would you want to grow anything in a whiskey barrel, I hear you ask? Well simply because you can and it actually looks pretty cool, if you ask me. Just take a look at the diy wine box garden beds and the diy wine barrel lettuce planter, we talked about in previous posts. With that in mind why then wouldn’t you also want to try this diy whiskey barrel mint garden?

I know the title targets ‘mint’ but you can pretty much grow anything in your barrel. Mint is targeted because usually when you plant it in the ground, it tends to want to take over way too much space. The whiskey barrel not only looks cool, but has a wide opening that allows you to grow more veggies and herbs. Plus this is also a great way to repurpose a barrel, that may otherwise have found its way to a local dump.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

• 1/2 whiskey barrel
• potting soil
• deep organic litter
• mint plants
• mulch
• markers (optional)

Location wise, I would place my barrel somewhere it gets a lot of sun and probably next to other herb planters. Since it is quite a large tub you maybe tempted to throw in a couple of shovels of garden soil, in an attempt to fill it. Don’t do it, especially if you are planting mint which demands a lot of water and therefore calls for potting soil as it has the ability to retain water.

With your soil filled in, you can plant your herbs. Plant markers are great for keeping track of which is which, so those are recommended. Also after the first good watering, apply a healthy layer ot mulch to help reduce evaporation. Overall, it is straight forward gardening project that shouldn’t take more than an hour to complete.
