DIY Hula Hoop Chicken Tractor

All the attention seems to fall on the big girls, so today I decided to give the ‘small’ girls some love. We have already looked at how to raise baby chicks, the homemade electrolytes for baby chickens as well as how to build the simple diy chick brooder. The big girls already have their diy chicken tractor, so I thought it will be nice to build this diy hula hoop chicken tractor for the chicken babies.

It is just the perfect size for about 10 to 15 of them, depending on their size of course. I can separate them from the bigger ones, and let them free range out in the sun within the secure walls of the tractor. This portable solution can easily be moved around the yard, out of the heat or to an entirely different location. This simple project shouldn’t take more than an hour to complete.

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • 2 hula hoops
  • cage wire
  • cable ties or wire
  • tape measure
  • wire cutter (optional)

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1.

Measure the diameter of your hula hoops
using the tape measure.

Step 2.

Roll out and cut the cage wire to the same length
as the measurement you got above.

Step 3.

Attach one of the hula hoops to the cage wire
using wire or cable ties.

Step 4.

Repeat the last step on the other hula hoop.

Step 5.

Test your tractor, it should be able to stand upright
on the ground by itself without collapsing.

There you go, you now have a chicken tractor for the babies. Don’t forget to include a feeder and a waterer when you leave them out in there, or they could starve to death. Also try not to leave them out in hot sun for too long, they are probably better off in a nice partly shaded area. That way if you forget to come move them, you will not find them passed out from heat exhaustion. 🙂
