DIY Water Jug Chicken Feeders

Show me a chicken farmer who hasn’t tried different feeders or waterers, and I will smack them hard on the head. In fact, just forward them links to some of the ones I have shared on this blog such as the diy trough style chicken feeder, diy chicken nipple waterer and diy plastic bucket chicken feeder. Today, let’s add another one onto the list, this diy water jug chicken feeder (or waterer).

This automatic feeder and waterer design ensures that the chickens have plenty of food and water available over longer periods of time. They are made from affordable materials, you can probably reuse a couple of things on your homestead too. The feeders rely on gravity to dispense the feed and water as the chickens feed. They are generally not messy at all, and allow very little waste.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • 5 gallon water jugs
  • 5 gallon plastic bucket
  • handheld drill
  • PVC pipe
  • wood screws
  • tape measure
  • hacksaw
  • marker

The water jugs were most likely used for storing water, however give them a good wash before using them for your feeders. You are going to need a make a jig to use when you are spacing the access holes for your chickens on the buckets. Then you can use the drill to cut out the holes, remember less is more, don’t drill too many slits.

The drilled holes will have to be connected and then you can move on to cutting out the PVC pipe for the stands. These will hold the jugs in place, but allow the feed and water to slowly dispense from the inverted jugs. Once you have all the ‘accessories’ you can go ahead and assemble your feeder and fill up the jugs with water and or feed.
