DIY Plastic Bucket Chicken Feeder

One of the problems that most people who are just starting out raising chickens have is choosing the right feeder. I have shown you several designs over the years like the diy no waste chicken feeder bin and the diy no spill pvc chicken feeder. Yet another option is this diy plastic bucket chicken feeder.

This is probably one of the easiest chicken feeder designs out there. By just looking at the photo below, you can probably figure out how to make it. Reuse an old plastic bucket, one that leaks when filled with water will work just fine. If you can find one with a lid and handle that would be even better.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • 5 gallon plastic bucket
  • utility knife
  • chicken feed
  • marker
  • tape measure
  • sand paper or sander
  • reciprocating saw (optional)
  • strong wire (optional)
  • cinder blocks (optional)

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1.

Use your tape measure and marker to mark out
circles 2 inches in diameter and 3 inches long.

These openings should be about 1 and half inches apart
and at least 2 inches from the bottom of the bucket.

Step 2.

Mark out the outlines of the circles, using the
measurements from step 1 as guidelines. They do not
have to be perfect, so don’t sweat it.

Step 3.

Carve out the circles one by one, using the utility
knife or any other cutting device that works.

Step 4.

Sand out the edges to get rid of any sharp bits
that may harm your chickens.

Step 5.

Fill with feed about halfway, and then close the lid.

The feeder can be left to sit on top of some cinder blocks or you can hand it from above using the handle. If the bucket does not have a handle, just replace with strong or rope wire instead. Make sure the feeder is at a height that your chickens can easily access feed inside.
