As the number of chickens starts ballooning on your homestead, you will start to go through a lot of feed if you are not prepared. Over the years we have used this diy garbage can chicken feeder and this diy no waste chicken feeder bin. But recently this new diy long arm PVC chicken feeder design, peeked my interest.
The mere fact that it is built mainly from PVC, means that it should be an affordable built. In fact Darren says he managed to get all the required materials for slightly less than $25. As far as saving on feed is concerned they went from 100 pounds of feed in 6 to 7 weeks and doubled the time to 14 weeks instead. With such savings, we are surely going to give it a try.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- 4″ PVC pipe
- long Sweep elbow 90 degree
- street sweep elbow 90 degree
- rubber flexible end cap
- screw driver
- 3″ end cap
- 2×4 lumber
- circular saw
- rope (optional)
Your feed trough will need some support, with this in mind nailing a 2×4 in place should do the job. The 4″ PVC has to be cut to two different lengths with the shorter one having holes at least 5″ wide for the chickens to feed from. When you mount the trough, remember to do so at an angle, to allow your feed to slide down.
The longer piece is the ‘feed storage’ are it is connected to the trough using the elbow and the end cap. If you have a rat problem, then you may have to consider making the lid for the trough. This with an added weight on top, should keep them out. A rope could be used to act as a remote control for opening and closing the lid from outside the coop. Pretty cool design, I must say! 🙂
