We recently welcomed two new ‘kids’ to our homestead. Before you get any ideas, I am actually talking about goat kids not real kids kids. LOL. Anywho, we already have the diy goat kid warmer set up from last time, but we have decided that later own we are going to introduce them to their own diy rain barrel goat kid beds.
With the many rain barrel projects that we undertake, I was lucky to find two barrels which are now leaking but will be perfect for this project. That find essentially cut the cost of the project to zero. When the kids outgrow their beds, we can then move them to barn with the big goats. But first things first, let us make these ‘kids’ their beds… Shall we?
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- rain barrels
- utility knife
- marker
- tape measure
- sander or sand paper
- hay
- weight (optional)
Step By Step Instructions
Step 1.
Wash and dry the barrels.
Step 2.
Mark and measure the top of door
12″ from the bottom of the barrel.
Step 3.
The door should be about 6″ at
the top and 9″ at the bottom.
Step 4.
Cut out the door and sand out the
sharp edges to make them smooth.
Step 5.
Place some hay inside for the
bedding for the goat kids to lay.
Remember to replace the hay as often as possible, in order to keep the sleeping area clean. You may want to weigh down the barrels too, just in case the kids knock them over when they are playing. Each kid should get its own bed, do not try to force two to sleep in one bed! 🙂
