DIY Old Fridge Root Cellar

When you start producing your own food, you soon realize something pretty quick. The space that you had is never enough, to store all your produce. We have made a few of these diy trash can root cellars, over the years. I told the hubby that maybe it is time we consider setting up this diy old fridge root cellar too.

In all honesty, we probably need to actually build a large root cellar. However, at the moment we do not have time to take on a full construction project. Besides the cost and time, the cooler weather is a factor too. Re-purposing the old fridge though, is not only more cost effective, it is also faster. Oh yes, you can use an old chest freezer too, if that is all you have.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Your fridge or freezer will need to be buried, so the first order of business will be digging a hole big enough to accommodate your appliance. You should also allow extra space for the cinder blocks that the fridge will be perched on. Also remove the coil at the back and any other electronic components such as the compressor.

Any holes or opening left exposed can be covered using the screen material. Next, a chimney hole needs to be cut out and any extra foam separating the compartments inside should also be removed. Attach the side panels with help protect the door and the hinges from dirt. This root cellar is perfect for storing all your root vegetables like potatoes and carrots as well as fruits like apples. 🙂
