Before we got our homestead, the garbage can was just that… a can to put trash in. Only to find out that you could use it to build a diy garbage can rain barrel, diy garbage can chicken feeder or even a diy garbage can compost tumbler. It does not end there, just last week I discovered you could also make a diy garbage can goat feeder.
I have to admit there many different goat feeder designs available, but if you can find one that reduces hay wastage, you have a winner. It is even better, when it is an affordable project that does not take up too much of your time. For this project, I would recommend that you select a light weight garbage can, as you have to suspend it once it has been installed.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- garbage can
- handheld drill
- hole saw
- tape measure
- pencil
- wire or ties
- hay
Step By Step Instructions
Step 1.
Measure and mark 2 inches from the
bottom of your garbage can.
Step 2.
If the can has flattened side panels,
you want to mark every 6 inches the
whole way around the can.
Step 3.
Grab your drill, with the hole saw
attachment and drill out all the openings.
Step 4.
Attach the can using wire or nails to
your goat pen or shed.
Step 5.
Open the lid, load up the hay and replace
the lid when your can is fully loaded.
The can should be attached at a height, that the goats can easily pull at the hay. This of course will depend on the goat breed. You may want to attach it loosely at first, just to make sure the goats are comfortable feeding from it. The goats should be able to pull out as much hay as they need without too much of a hassle.
