What most people don’t realize is that when it comes to raising chickens, the building of the chicken coop will probably be one of the easiest things. Then you may have to set up systems such as the diy automatic rain water chicken waterer or the diy automatic chicken treadle feeder. All this in an effort to better manage your coop. Another problem that may arise is flooding, and that is when you will need to deploy this diy chicken coop drainage system.
This is a simple project that only requires your beginner diy skills. If you are not yet handy with the power tools, you can use a hacksaw, it works just as well. Also you probably can scavage around your property for some of the materials, no need to break the bank buying brand new stuff at the hardware store. My thing is, so long as it does the desired job I could care less whether I recycled a metal plate or a few planks.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- 2x4s
- 2x6s
- galvanized metal sheets
- pvc pipe
- table saw
- angle grinder
- measuring tape
- marker
- round river rocks
- flat paver stone
- wood screws or nails
- handheld drill
Get started by measuring and cutting the lumber for your frames. Depending on how many waterers you are currently using in you coop, you would need a frame for each one. Although, you can just use glue or adheseive to assemble the frames, using screws will ensure a more strudy and durable frame. Who knows, you may want to move it to a different coop or location some day.
Attaching the metal plates can be a little tricky, but they guide the water to the drainage pipes therefore just take your time and do it right. Hmmm, I was thinking of using cinder blocks instead of pavers, but on second thought that may raise the waterer way too high for the girls. Even if you do not have sand as your coop floor, this system should still help keep the floor dry and not muddy. 🙂
