DIY Beehive In A Jar

Without bees, there is no honey. However many people are afraid of keeping bees, mainly because they sting. I know there are some, who are allergic to bees therefore beekeeping is something that they would rather stay away from. In a previous posts, I have shared how to extract honey from beehives and these diy ware beehive plans for your homestead. Since then I have found an easier solution, this diy beehive in a jar.

This is perfect for the those just starting out in the beekeeping arena, as well as those who just want an affordable and simple beehive setup. Mason jars are readily available in most kitchens, instead of using brand new ones re-use some old ones for this project to save money. Another thing, I like about this setup is how easy it is to harvest the honey which will accumulate in the honeycombs in your jars.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • 2″ x 12″ x 6′ wood
  • 2″ x 12″ x 6′ wood
  • 1″ x 1″ x 6′ wood
  • 1″ x 1″ x 6′ wood
  • thick plywood
  • bottom beehive kit
  • big mouth quart sized jars
  • wood screws
  • wood stain
  • bees
  • cordless drill
  • drill bit
  • hole saw
  • hacksaw
  • miter saw (optionl)

Get started by cutting the thick plywood to the required size. Use your tape measure and marker to mark 12 holes and then drill pilot holes first before using the hole saw to drill the 3 and a half inch holes for the jars. Cut the other two pieces from the boards, join them using wood screws and stain them too.

Check to make sure all your jars fit into the holes. They should be able to sit snugly with their screw lids on. Support them if need be with small pieces of wood. In order to make things easier, install a bottom beehive kit for the entrance and exit. The bees will be added to the jars and should begin building honeycombs and making honey very shortly. Just be patient.
