Homemade Blueberry Jam

Surprisingly this year our blueberry patch was very productive. That is always very rewarding when you are an avid gardener. I have already shared with you how to grow blueberries at home and how to go about canning blueberries. Today I will go a step further and share how to make your own blueberry jam at home.

Unlike other jam recipes, this one does not require pectin. Chia seeds are used for thickening the jam. You do not have to worry about preservatives or insane amounts of sugar in this version. Plus if you want more fiber you can add flaxseeds to it. Are you ready for the simple instructions?

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • fresh blueberries
  • raw honey
  • lemon juice
  • chia seeds
  • mason jars
  • medium bowl
  • medium stock pot
  • flaxseeds (optional)
  • lemon zest (optional)

In your bowl, coat your blueberries with honey, before transferring everything to the pot. Turn on the heat to medium/low and heat for about 5 minutes at which time your blueberries should be soft. Use your wooden spoon to smash the berries lightly after which you can turn off the heat.

The chia seeds, and any other optional additions can be added now before mixing everything well. Turn on the heat, but this time allow the jam to bubble which in turn allows it to thicken. After about 5 minutes, you can remove from the heat and allow to cool. Store in your fridge for up to 14 days.
