What is your favorite citrus fruit? Wait don’t answer that just yet reserve your answer for now. Whilst you ponder your choice, let us look at how to preserve it for long term storage. In the previous blogs, I shared how to can lemons and even how to can mandarins. We will move on today, and take on the art of preserving citrus fruit in sand the same way the pioneers did.

The best thing about the method below is that you can adopt it and use for all other citrus fruit including but not limited to lemons and oranges. For this method besides the fruit, you only need two other things. These you either already have in and around your homestead or grab from your local hardware store. This simple method, shows us how we do not need complicated methods to preserve our fruit.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

• fresh citrus fruit
• 5 gallon plastic bucket or any container
• playground sand or river sand

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1.

Lay down a layer of sand, in the
bottom of the bucket.

Step 2.

Lay down your fruit, in a circular pattern
making sure that it does not touch the edges
or any of the other fruit.

Step 3.

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 until all the fruit is
preserved or the bucket is full.

Make sure that you cover your last layer of fruit with sand, do not leave it exposed. Also instead of using a plastic bucket, feel free to use any other container that you may have available. Apparently back in the old days, they used wooden boxes or crates. How long can fruit stored like this last? Well, from proven results at least 3 months, probably more. 🙂
