There is one of my kitchen tools that I probably should be using more often, and honestly I have no viable excuse as to why I don’t. If you been reading my posts for a few years, you may remember when I shared how to bake in a dutch oven? Well, I saw it sitting in the kitchen the other day and I ended up looking up a few recipes, just so that I could use it. Therefore, in today’s post we will be taking a look at how to bake pie in your dutch oven.
I actually like dutch ovens, as the allow you to easily cook your favorite meals over open flames. Their design allows heat to be evenly distributed throughout, allowing for your food inside to cook evenly. Many people shy away from using this apparatus, thinking that it maybe complicated. When in fact it is the opposite, as I am slowly discovering. You just need the right set of accessories and knowledge on how to cook each of your favorite recipes.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- favorite pie recipe
- dutch oven
- charcoal briquettes or coal
- parchment dutch oven liners
- cast iron pie pan
- cast iron trivet
Of course, you are going to have to first mix your favorite pie ingredients and once that is ready, you can then move on to setting up your dutch oven. Depending on the size of your dutch oven you will have a certain number of briquettes on the bottom, they are generally fewer than the ones that you place on top.
Also it is recommended that you do not bake your pie in the dutch oven itself, opting for either parchment liners or a cast iron pan instead. When baking a pie the initial stage involves high heat to bake and make the crust crispy. Gradually the heat will drop and allow for the cooking of the filling. I tried baking an apple pie using the dutch oven, and I was really surprised how it came out.
