How To Freeze Fresh Cabbage Heads

Oh my lawd, when you talk about life savers, this has to rank right up there. I mean how many times have you found yourself in a situation when you have more cabbages than you can eat. We usually end up sharing ours with the livestock, however this year we were able to save quite a bit more by freezing fresh cabbage heads.

Don’t worry this is not a complicated process. As long as you can follow a few step by step process, you should be able to preserve your cabbage using this method. I take extra care when it comes to soaking the cabbages. Trust me, you do not want to see any slugs frozen within your cabbage, that would be just gross.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • fresh cabbage heads
  • large stock pot
  • colander
  • ziploc bags
  • water
  • chopping board
  • sharp knife
  • ice
  • food saver (optional)

After harvesting your cabbage from your garden, remove up to 5 outer leaves and then allow them to soak in your sink for about 3 hours. This is done to get rid of any pests that may have been hiding within the leaves. Just to make sure you get them all, move your heads around whilst their soaking.

Remove from the sink, and allow them to dry before cutting them into quarters. Make sure the core remains inside or your cabbage will fall apart. Boil water in the stock pot and add the ice into your sink with some water to make ice water.

To blanch your heads, allow to sit in boiling water for at least 3 minutes, then immediately transfer to the ice water in your sink. Remove from sink, and allow to cool and drain in your colander. Before I go ahead and pack them into the ziploc bags, I make sure they are dry and even give each one a nice squeeze. Store in your freezer, until you need to them for cooking your meals. 🙂
