How To Grow Wasabi

I can bet you that you probably will find this in only a few home gardens around the world. Even though most of enjoy our sushi, it is probably just easier to buy it than try growing your own wasabi. However, since I enjoy challenging myself the same way I did when I tried to grow vidalia onionsor grow tamarillos. this. I decided to give it a go too, why not?

Eutrema japonicum  or Wasabia Japonica is one of the most difficult plants to cultivate. Not only does it required constant stable temperatures of between 45 to 75 degrees F, it also prefers to be grown in a shaded environment. On top of all of that you have to maintain these conditions for at least 2 years for your first harvest. Honestly, it is probably easier to grow it in a greenhouse than out in your garden.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

The best location is a shaded area with well drained soil, therefore either choose a nice big tree or create your own shaded area. Till the soil and work in the compost too. Ideal soil pH for wasabi is between 6 to 7. Your seeds should be soaked overnight before planting in rows 6 inches apart and in row spacing of about 2 inches.

Water regularly, you don’t want to over water and neither do you want to under water. It is recommend that you mist your plants or set up a drip irrigation system. This will help you to restrict the growth of fungus or root rot. Also keep an eye out for aphids. Apply fertilizer once a year if needed and weed regularly. It takes 2 years for the rhizomes to be ready for harvest. Carefully dig them up and store fresh in your fridge for a month or dry for later use.
