Yes, that is right! We are on a mission to grow as many different nuts on our homestead as is possible. So far we have successfully grown cashew nuts, peanuts, hazelnuts and even pistachios. How hard could it be then to grow walnut trees from seed, huh?
After digging deep into the whole process on the internet, I have discovered that it is way easier to grow these tree from a budded tree or cutting. If you are going to be using seeds, then you can only use natural fresh walnuts. Roasted, treated, processed or heated nuts will not germinate. I guess it is time to go walnut gathering, get your baskets ready.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- walnut seeds
- plastic bag
- sand
- mulch
- potting mix
- compost
- containers
It is important to note that only about half of the seeds you select will germinate. The seeds must be soaked for at least 48 hours before they are placed into a plastic bag filled with moist soil. This bag should then be kept in your fridge for about 4 to 5 months. Depending on the climate in your area, you can either plant seedlings directly into the ground or in containers.
Some people have managed to germinate seeds planted directly into the garden soil. Plants in containers can then be transplanted as soon as they are about 6 inches tall. Apply mulch around the tree to conserve water. Don’t expect any fruit from your tree for the first 7 years, sometimes as many as 10 years.
