Let me introduce you to the next generation in low calorie nuts. Just like any other nut, be it a peanut , hazelnut or almond pistachios are also loaded with good nutrients that your body needs. I have always wanted to add a pistachio tree to our homestead, so I went ahead and did some research on the best way to achieve this.
There are two ways to go about growing your own Pistachio tree, you can either germinate the seeds or you can use cuttings. In this post, we will concentrate on the seeds which should be raw seeds. These can be straight from another tree from a health food store or you can order them online. Pistachio trees like areas that have high Summer temperatures above 100 degrees F and cooler winters above 15 degrees F.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- raw pistachio seeds
- plastic cups
- potting soil
- ziploc bag
- paper towel
- water
- nut cracker
- hammer (optional)
Alright, let us start by cracking open the shells of your pistachios using the nutcracker. Fold your sheet of paper towel so that it can fit in your ziploc bag. Then soak the paper towel in water and place the seeds on top of it. Pistachio seeds need warmth to germinate, so after you place the paper towel in the bag move it, next to a window that gets a lot of sunlight.
Make sure that the paper towel stays damp, so you may have to add more water in about 5 to 7 days. After a few weeks the seeds will start to sprout, and it is now time to transplant them to the small containers with potting soil. Water them and a little sprout should start to peak out of the soil within a day or two. After a few weeks you can transplant the seedling into your garden or a larger container. It may take about 7 to 10 years before they start producing nuts.
