How To Grow Pink Banana Squash

When I was a little girl, I used to think anything pink was pretty. Guess what, I still do! So even though we have already explored how to grow butternut squash and how to grow spaghetti squash, in earlier posts, I was still very excited to experience growing pink banana squash.

The scientific name is Cucurbita Maxima, their origins have been traced back to the South American region. The most popular varieties are the jumbo or giant ones. They do well in the colder zones, however just make sure that the temperature never goes below 50 degrees F. If you do not reign them in with a trellis or something else, the vines can take up a lot of space in your garden.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Your bed has to be prepared before you plant these. The manure and the compost has to be worked into the soil. When it comes time to plant, it is recommended that you plant your seeds in tiny mounds. Direct sow at least 4 seeds per mound, 4 inches apart and space them about 6 inches apart. Wait until at least 21 days after the last frost before planting your seeds.

Water your hills evenly until the seeds germinate, and when the seedlings are strong enough you can thin them out leaving 2 plants per hill. At this time you could also erect some sort of trellis. Fertilize with compost tea every 3 weeks and also keep an eye out for beetles and aphids. When the squash turn pink, they are ready for harvest.
