How many different types of squash can you grow in your garden? The answer is simple, way too many! LOL I have already shown you how to grow summer squash and how to grow spaghetti squash in your garden, right? Would you like to learn how to grow butternut squash too? Why not, huh?
Did you know that they are also considered winter squash? Well now you do, and you should also know that they are pretty easy to grow. You just have to make sure that the right conditions are present in order to be successful. I usually just cook and use them the same way I would pumpkin, and that includes making pumpkin pie too. Just like carrots they are very rich in beta- carotene.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- butternut squash seeds or seedlings
- compost
- well rotted manure
- organic fertilizer
- spade
- trellis (optional)
There are quite a few options when it comes to growing butternut squash. You can either grow from seed or plant seedlings. If your space is limited you can even grow them in containers. Start your seeds indoors if you have a short summer season, otherwise you can direct sow the seeds into the soil in mid summer. Recommended plant spacing is about 3 feet apart.
They will need to be watered regularly as much as 3 times per week when the days are hot. When they start fruiting you should apply fertilizer every two weeks. Make sure that you water the base of the plant and keep an eye out for squash bugs, striped cucumber beetles and powdery mildew. They should be ready for harvest about 110 to 120 days after planting.
