Eat your broccoli! I remember a few years back when the girls were younger, I would spend most of the meal, just screaming that at them. That was one of the vegetables they never wanted to see on their plates. However, that did not stop me from growing broccoli and growing broccolini in my garden every single gardening season. Recently, I decided to go a step further and experiment with growing broccoli from stem scraps.
Some like to refer to it as lazy gardening, but I actually enjoy regrowing vegetables from kitchen scraps. I previously have had a lot of success in that realm, therefore I will keep on keeping on. Tee hee hee heee! For this method, besides the broccoli, you only need some water and a wide mouth jar or a water glass. I would try stick to using the fresher and healthier stems, and cook those that look like they have had better days. Local farm market or grocery store bought ones should be fine too.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- fresh broccoli stems
- wide mouth mason jar
- water
- potting soil
- container
- small spritz bottle
The length of your stalk will determine your success with this method. Ideally you want to use stalks that are at least 5 inches long when considering regrowing your broccoli. After you have identified your stalk, you’ll need to clean it up. Then place your stalk in half a jar of water and leave it to sit by sunny windowsill. In about 7 days, you should start to see some new root growth. When the roots are thick and a few inches long you can then transplant the stems into a container with potting soil.
