How To Grow Breadfruit

Have you ever had bread that is actually a fruit? Yes, there is such a thing. Ok, well technically speaking it is not really a fruit. We have looked at a few bread recipes on this blog such as the homemade rye bread, homemade naan bread recipe and the homemade no knead bread mix. But instead of baking, how about you learn how to grow breadfruit?

I know that breadfruit (Artocarpus Altilis) is not really popular in the United States. Especially since this tree thrives in tropical and subtropical regions. I was first introduced to it during my college days when a group of us headed for a one week vacation to the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia. Most families enjoy this starchy ‘fruit’ on a daily basis, and there are various ways of cooking it.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

If you do not have access to root shoots, you are going to have a difficult time trying to grow one of these trees. Also, those in colder climates will probably want to try growing a dwarf variety in your greenhouse. The root shoots should be placed in a bag containing potting mix and which is then tied.Initially keep the bag in a shaded area for up to 5 weeks.

Keep an eye on the roots, they will tell when the time is right to move the bag to more sunshine. Keep the shoots well watered and it should be transplanting ready within 90 to 150 days. Double the depth of your roots when transplanting. Initial fruiting will be within 3 years. After 5 years you can expect up to 350 pounds of fruit every year. Generally the trees have a productive lifespan of over 60 years.
