How To Get Rid Of Cutworms

Gardening can be lots of fun, especially when everything goes smoothly. There are a few things that an affect your garden like a drought, pests and diseases. We have looked at how to get rid of slugs with beer and how to fight tomato blight using pennies in a previous post, today I want to take a look at how to get rid of cutworms.

If you are not familiar with cutworms, they are actually larvae, that have a short lifespan. They attack your plants by making their way up the stem, and then cutting their way down the stem. Once they are in pupae stage, then you are home free. They should no longer be an issue by mid Summer.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

There are a few all natural and organic methods you can use to tackle your cutworm problem. The easiest and most popular is using Diatomaceous Earth, however if you have bees, this can kill them too. Tilling and turning the soil can expose the cutworms for the birds to feast on from the ground.

Plant collars can also help. However, they can be quite expensive, you can use toilet paper rolls instead. Just cut them in half and place them around the plant in the same way as you would with plant collars. Anything tall placed around the stem such as nails, toothpics or plastic drinking straws can be used as stem protectors. If all fails you can just pick some and squish them. Get the kids to help you, for some family fun. 🙂
