DIY Plastic Bucket Compost Bin

Seriously how many things can one make from empty plastic buckets? I have lost count, but absolutely love it. The time we made the diy garbage can compost tumbler, after building the diy 3 bin compost system. Let us add to the list with this diy plastic bucket compost bin.

The good news is you do not have to spend a lot of money to get started composting. For starters most of these buckets are available either for free or for a few bucks each. That is really the only thing you need for this setup. A solution like this is perfect for indoor composting or for those of us that have limited gardening space.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • 5 gallon plastic bucket with lid
  • screwdriver
  • handheld drill
  • 1/4 or 1/2″ drill bit

The first thing I did was give the bucket a good wash. This is an important step, especially if you will be re-purposing one. You can then move on to drilling a series of holes in the lid, and around the sides and on the bottom too. These holes are essential for letting any moisture out of the bucket during the 6 week composting period.
