If you have chickens that lay eggs, then you know how important it is for them to have a warm and comfortable place to lay their eggs. In previous posts, we have looked at many different nesting box designs such as the diy plastic bucket nesting box, the diy plastic bowl nesting box and the diy easy clean chicken nesting box. I also found this diy plastic tote nesting box, on Pinterest.
This is the perfect starter nesting box. Not only is it affordable, it is also very easy to build. You can re-purpose some old totes or make a quick trip to your local Walmart and grab one or two. The materials for the bed can easily be found around the homestead, which again will help you keep costs down. Oh, let us not even mention the short time it takes to build one of these.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- plastic tote box
- utility knife or cutter
- wood shavings
- marker
Step By Step Instructions
Step 1.
Use the marker to mark out the nesting box opening
that your hens can comfortably use to enter
on one of the sides of the tote box.
Step 2.
Grab your utility knife or cutter to trace around the
lines marked above. Cut out the opening your hens will use.
Step 3.
Place wood shavings on the bottom of the box to provide
a soft base where the hens can lay their eggs.
Step 4.
Place the totes in a corner in your coop, if you have
more than one you can sit them on top of each other.
When you have a stack of totes, you are most likely going to need something to weigh them down. A more permanent solution would be one as seen in the picture above. Use some 2x4s attached to your chicken coop above your tote nesting boxes. Also allow a small ledge for the chickens to step on especially on the second level.
