DIY Easy Lift Chicken Egg Door

If you can manage to make your chores easier, life does also become easier. I don’t know if you remember the post on diy roll away nest boxes, they would roll down so that you can easily collect them. This diy easy lift chicken egg door, can also help you make the egg collection process easier.

This is an ingenious system that takes advantage of the laws of physics. The whole system depends on the weighted counter balance. Essentially when you open the door to the nesting box, it stays open because the weights inside the coop hold it open. Speaking of the weights inside the coop, please make sure that you secure them well, otherwise they could come loose and land on the chickens.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • picture frame wire
  • 2×4 plank
  • clotheslinepulley
  • weights
  • wood screws
  • hand held drill
  • eyelet
  • rubber tubing
  • wire (optional)

Ok, so the basic setup is that you want the wire to run from inside the coop, through the wall to the door of the nesting box. This means you will need to drill a hole in the wall just below the roof. Depending on the type of roof, you may have to attach a 2×4 to the roof supports, and then screw in the pulley to this addition instead of the roof.

The eyelet end is attached to the nesting box end outside. Inside the wire will run through the pulley and the weights are then secured to that other end. In order to prevent wear and tear, it maybe wise to insert some rubber tubing inside the hole in the wall. When everything is setup, you should be able to open the door and not worry about it slamming down, whilst you collect eggs.
