The first question you probably have is, why on heaven’s earth is it hanging? LOL Well it is all in an effort to keep your chickens entertained believe it or not. I have shared other methods in the past such as the diy chicken boredom buster toy and the diy chicken coop swing. This diy hanging cabbage will be your latest addition to the chicken toys catalog on your homestead.

But why the cabbage you ask? Well it serves two purposes. The first being that it helps stimulate the chickens natural foraging instinct. Secondly it provides them with a much needed workout session by providing a feeding source that is challenging. Although you may not have cabbage heads, readily available from your garden during the winter, it is actually the best time to implement this ‘exercise’ option in the coop.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

• cabbage
• handheld drill
• piece of rope or string

As you can see from the short list of required materials and the picture above, this is actually a pretty simple project that anyone can setup in their coop. I know you will be tempted to use the cabbages that are about to go bad, however I feel like the fresher the better. The fresh ones will last longer and therefore you won’t have to be constantly changing it in the coop.

I also love the start high, then go low approach that she uses with her chickens. It makes a lot of sense, you always want to get someone hooked on something before actually making them work for it. Same thing goes for the girls, but at least this time it won’t cost them anything just a little ‘sweat’ and energy. Keep those kneck and thigh muscles toned! 🙂
