How To Sweeten Watermelons

When we speak of things that are naturally sweet, there is honey and then there is the watermelons growing in my garden, of course. Although we can just water them, fertilize them and hope that they grow up to be sweet, why leave every thing to chance? This is the reason why I went online and spent a lot of time researching how to sweeten watermelons a few weeks back.

In an earlier post we looked at tips on how to pick the sweetest watermelon. If you use the tips in this post, you will spend less time trying to pick a watermelon in your garden. Simply because most of them will already be sweet. If all fails, then there is one tip below that you can use after you have cut your melon open and discovered it is not as sweet as you hoped it would be. I also link to another post, where you can get even more tips.

Tip #1: Boron

Applying boron at the right time will provide the vines with the boost they need to produce sweet and jucy melons. A simple homemade solution of 1 tablespoon borax to 1 gallon water sprayed on the base and leaves when the plant starts to crawl on the ground, will do the trick.

Tip #2: Water

Initially when the plants are getting established it is recommended that you water at least once everyday. However, as soon as the vines start bearing fruit you should slow down the watering rate to once every 3 to 4 days. What you are essentially doing is helping the fruit concentrate its sugars, ultimately enhancing the flavor and sweetness.

Tip #3: Sea Salt

If all fails when the melons are still out in your garden, then you have one more shot before serving them. All you have to do is sprinkle a little sea salt on the slices. Yep you read that right SALT. The reason this works is because when you apply salt, in small amounts to anything sweet it will in turn strengthen the taste of sweetness. Go ahead, give it a try! 🙂

The use of plastic mulch, overloading the melons with sweetness and laying two melons under the sun will also help you. For detailed information on these technique as well as other valuable ‘watermelon’ information please visit Lucy’s blog…
