I know if I had to build my first chicken coop, one of the first things I would target to convert into one would be the garden shed. At least you would not have to build the outer shell like the diy wood pallet chicken coop and the diy chicken coop greenhouse. So I found a guide ‘sort of’ to help you build your diy garden shed chicken coop.
You can use an old or new garden shed, just depends on what you can get your hands on. There are also a few extra materials and accessories that you will need, most of which you can probably re-purpose. Otherwise, a short trip to your local hardware store maybe required.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- old or new garden shed
- 6 x 6 timbers
- cinder blocks
- cement
- 2 x 4 board
- nesting boxes
- windows
- 1/4″ hardware cloth
- latches
- fan
- droppings board
- paint (optional)
Your shed may already be sitting in your backyard, in which case you have to raise it from the ground using the 6×6 or cinder blocks. You want free airflow and drainage under the coop. A layer of cement inside the coop will also help keep other critters and rodents out.
With the basic work done, all you have to do is add the accessories to your coop. The roosting bar, the nesting boxes, some windows in the back as well as the sides, extra latches on the door and a fan to help with air circulation in the summer. A droppings board to collect the poop and painting the coop are optional.
