When you are living out there off grid, money is usually a luxury. That is why we tend to try make our own cheaper versions of everything. For example, the diy terra cotta pizza oven and the diy solar powered radio. Sometimes, I am surprised by the things and tools we can make at home like this diy car battery welding machine.
Most welding machines, can cost an arm and a leg, but thankfully not this one. Just imagine, you can easily make this from 3 inexpensive items, that you probably already have in your workshop. Not only is it a welding machine, it can also be used for soldering and cutting. Unless you can afford it, there is really no need to purchase new batteries for this hack.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- 12V car battery
- 2 thick wires or jumper cables
- carbon rod from torch battery
- pliers
- utility knife
- gloves
- safety glasses
Did you know that inside a torch battery, there is a carbon rod? Neither did I, but if you unwrap the casing that is exactly what you will find right in the middle. The rod is connected to one of the terminals via the jumper cables. The other cable is connected to the metal plate being welded.
The carbon rod will be your welding rod, use the pliers to hold it whilst you are welding. It is recommended that you wear gloves and safety glasses when you use the machine. Also, do not weld for more than 5 minutes at a time, the cables may overheat. Regular use may also damage the battery.
