How To Dehydrate Onions

There are several different ways you can preserve onions from your garden. Hanging your onions out fresh is probably the most common one. However, I understand that you can go wild and try canning them too. I will try that after, I have mastered the art of dehydrating onions.

Why would you want to dehydrate onions? Well for one, when dry you can store way more onions in one tin container and that in turn saves you a lot of space. Also, dehydrated onions can last for up to a year. This gives you enough to use for cooking until your next gardening season.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • onions
  • sharp knife
  • chopping board
  • food dehydrator
  • wax paper
  • a tin gallon container
  • gallon ball jar
  • ziploc bag (optional)

When using onions fresh from the garden, it is recommended that you cure them first by placing in a ziploc bag and freezing for at least 14 days. You can then wash them, remove the tops and chop on your chopping board. Transfer onto your dehydrator trays, as you process the batch.

Make sure that the onions are in a nice single layer, before running the dehydrator. The best time to run it is overnight, which will give you about 12 hours. It is also recommended that you have one dehydrator dedicated to onions and that you process them outside your kitchen or house as the smell lingers long after you are done. Store in a tin gallon container in a cool dry place.
