Old Fashioned Blackberry Jam Recipe

We love our homemade jam over here, and we also enjoy making it. Remember the hstrawberry peach freezer jam and the homemade orange jam we made, in the past. Well today I would love to share with you this old fashioned blackberry jam recipe that I discovered a few months back.

Unlike other jam recipes, this one does not require any pectin. However, you will need to use a lot more sugar instead. Also make sure that you sterilize your jars, lids and rings before you stuff your delicious homemade jam into them.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • fresh blackberries
  • sugar
  • canning jars with lids
  • large stock pot
  • large pan
  • potato masher
  • whisk
  • tongs

You can sterilize your jars whilst you are preparing the jam, just place them in a pot covered with water and let them boil in there. Wash and rinse your berries, before mashing them with the potato masher. Use just as many cups of sugar as your berries.

Place the mashed berries in a pan and allow them to boil for at least 3 minutes, before you add the sugar. Return to the heat and let the mixture boil for another 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and whisk the mixture for at least another 3 minutes.

Fill each of the jars leaving about an inch of head space. Then use your tongs to place the lids and rings and screwing on the lids tight. Sit the jars on top of a kitchen towel on your counter, and leave them there to cool and you should hear the ‘pop’ sounds as they seal. Makes about 8 to 9 jars, and store them in a cool dry cupboard or a shelf in your pantry.
