Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Metal Trash Can
  • Loose stones or Gravel
  • Cinder Blocks
  • Shovel
  • Straw
  • Sheet Of Plywood
  • Hand Drill (optional)

The first thing you have to do is dig a hole almost the same height and diameter as the trash can. Punch some holes into the bottom of the trash can, using the drill or a nail and hammer. This is to allow any moisture to drain out. Before sitting the can into the hole lay down some loose stones or gravel.

Starting with a layer of straw on the very bottom, alternate layers of straw and your produce, for example potatoes. Be careful what foods you store in your new root cellar, for example potatoes and onions don’t store well together.

Cover with the lid, and place another layer of straw on top of the lid. To secure the whole can, and protect it from wild animals cover with a sheet of plywood, weighted down with a brick.
