Oh my, lookey here what I found. Another way for us lazy gardeners to save time and energy, whilst always keeping our plants watered. I remember, the last ones I shared with you were the diy self watering earth box and the diy self watering rain gutter garden. A few backs, my friend Suzie introduced me to these diy olla watering pots.

After doing my research online, it seems like these have been used for many centuries especially in the drier climates. The way these self watering pots work is by using the porous nature of the terracotta pots, which allows them to slowly release water into the soil as needed by your plants.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

• terracotta pots
• saucers for lids
• mounting putty
• cement
• sand
• shovel
• premixed concrete (optional)

There’s two ways to make these pots, one is more permanent than the other. Let us start with the temporary solution, where all you have to do is plug the holes on the bottom of your terracotta pots with putty. This allows you to remove the putty later on, and reuse the pots. The second more permanent method, involves placing an inch thick layer of concrete at the bottom of each pot.

Use what you have available, premixed or mix it yourself concrete will work just fine. After the concrete has set, just did a hole in your garden beds next to your plants and place the pots in there. Fill up with water, and cover with the lids. I personally prefer this option, because I don’t plan on digging up these pots and reusing them. Don’t forget to refill with water, when your pots are running low.
