How To Soak Your Seeds

Most of my vegetable gardening involves sowing seeds, but sometimes I am just too impatiend when it comes to germination. We have looked at how to save pea seeds and how to save tomato seeds in previous posts. When it comes to sowing them do you know how to soak your seeds, so as to speed up the whole process?

I always try to share as many gardening tips and tricks as I can with you guys on here. This particular one initially delays your seed sowing, but in the end you gain a few days. So why would you even bother soaking your seeds before sowing them? Well think of it this way seeds soaked for 24 hours absorb as much water as seeds in the ground absorb over 7 days. With that visual, you can see how soaking seeds can help speed up germination.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • seeds
  • small glass bowl
  • lukewarm water

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1.

Empty the seed packet into the bottom of your bowl.

Step 2.

Cover the seeds with about 2 to 3 inches of lukewarm water.

Step 3.

Set aside uncovered and let the seeds soak in the water for at least 24 hours.

Make sure the water is not too hot but is lukewarm, otherwise it will give your seeds a shock that will hinder the germination process. Although most seeds require 24 hours only of soaking, there are a few hours that you may have to soak for up to 48 hours. Sufficiently soaked seeds will lighten a few colors in shade and become plump, round, larger and softer to the touch. You can then go ahead and plant your seeds into the ground and expect a faster germination rate.
