From the name, you probably guessed right that this veggie ideally needs to be grown in close proximity to running water. But that shouldn’t deter you, especially if you are already involved with container gardening. Putting that slight hindrance aside, are you ready to start learning how to grow watercress?
Did you know that Watercress (Nasturtium officinale) is actually considered a super food? Apparently it boasts of more vitamins and nutrients than most other vegetables in your garden. It also helps that it is super easy to grow as long as you provide it with the right growing environment. It can be grown in the garden or in containers. Most of us will probably have no choice, but to go the container route.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- watercress cuttings
- rich compost soil
- containers
- river pebbles (optional)
For those who are lucky enough to have a running water source next to their garden, you can just transplant some rooting watercress to the soil next to water. It should start take root growing within a short while. Otherwise, grab two containers, one should fit into the other. Fill the smaller one with rich compost soil and plant your watercress in this one.
The smaller container will sit inside the larger one which will hold the water needed by the plants. Water daily and as long as there is a drainage hole, the smaller one will suck up the water. Keep an eye out for flea mustard beetles. Harvest only what you need to enjoy fresh, and stop harvesting as soon as they start to flower.
