How To Grow Red Potatoes

OMG! I used to just eat potatoes but I never really knew how packed with nutrients they are. From vitamin C to Potassium to being 99% fat free, I think I will be growing more potatoes from now on. Instead of planting the popular white variety, I looked up how to grow red potatoes.

Growing potatoes is recommended for beginner gardeners, because it is supposed to be pretty easy. I have grown potatoes before, and previously blogged about the many different ways and places to plant them. If you do not have your own livestock you can obtain manure from a local farmer or neighbor for free.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • red seed potatoes
  • cow or horse manure
  • rake
  • garden hoe
  • garden tiller
  • stake
  • string
  • compost
  • mulch
  • shovel
  • sharp knife
  • pitch folk

Use the sharp knife to cut your potatoes leaving at least one eye on each one. The fewer the eyes the larger the potatoes you will harvest, the more the eyes the more the potatoes. Your cut potatoes should be laid out side by side to dry for at least 24 hours before planting.

Make rows 24 inches apart, use the stake and string to help you make straight rows. Dig 10 to 12 inches, add your manure and compost before using the rake to create mounds that are 12 inches wide on the top and 6 inches high on the sides.

Seed potatoes are planted facing upwards, 3 inches deep and 12 inches apart. You always want to keep the area wet and you can add mulch as soon as the vines are 4 inches tall. It is time to harvest when the leaves begin turning yellow and the plants begin to wilt.
