Oh, ohhh I am just about to shake up your world. Most of us have only ever grown or seen yellow bananas, right? Well just like there is purple cauliflower or red onions, you will also find colorful bananas. In today’s post we shall be taking a look at how to grow red bananas in your garden.
Since discovering other banana varieties and colors, I have fallen in love with the red ones in particular. Although they are mainly grown in Africa, South America and Asia they can still be grown right here too. If you can get ahold of the suckers or a young plant, you are can plant one or two of these trees in your backyard garden or fruit orchard.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- red banana suckers or plants---------------------- Advertisement ----------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------- - pruning shears
- shovel
- organic fertilizer
- compost
- wire
- rope
- bamboo
- plastic bottles
In order to provide adequate drainage for your tree, it is recommended that you create raised garden beds. Work some compost into the soil, to make it richer. You do not want it too acidic, just a pH of 5 to 7 is required. Plant your trimmed suckers into planting holes that are a foot wide and about a foot deep.
Banana trees do not need a lot of water, watering once or twice every two weeks is enough. However make sure that the fertilizer you apply has high amounts of Potassium. As the tree matures, keep an eye out for pests. Also remove any suckers that may start growing from the tree. It will need to be supported as it gets top heavy, for that you either use wire, rope or bamboo.
