Growing Banana Trees From Seed

I am still to meet someone who does not enjoy a nice ripe banana. So why not grow your own banana tree in your backyard and enjoy an endless supply of free bananas. Some people try growing them from the actual banana fruit itself, however many do not succeed. The easy way is growing them from seeds, which you can buy online or at a nursery.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • banana seeds
  • seedling tray
  • potting soil
  • small container
  • organic fertilizer

Planting Instructions:

1. Soak your seeds in a small container with water for a minimum of 24 hours. Do not chip the seed, just make sure there is a tiny spot in the seed that becomes very soft.

2. Planting the seeds about one inch deep in soil. Cover the seeds well and keep them well watered.

3. Germination will take 21 to 28 days. Then it’s time to transplant into a bigger pot. They have a root system that grows very fast so the sooner you can transfer them to a bigger plant the better.

Banana plants are heavy feeders and they will grow very fast.  Remember to keep the soil moistened and begin fertilizing when it has at least one or two leaves. Transfer the plant to bigger pots or your garden as they grow bigger. They can grow up to 7 feet tall in the first season, when planted outside.
