How to Grow Persimmons

If you have never heard of these, you have probably seen them in grocery stores or farmers markets and mistaken them for heirloom tomatoes. It is no secret, that I am on mission to expand our orchard every year with jackfruit and red grapefruit having being the latest additions. After doing some research on how to grow persimmons, we will be soon be adding these as well.

Persimmons (Diospyros spp.) will definitely add some bright cool colors to your garden throughout the year. When the flowers are in full bloom, you have the pink and cream colors. When the fruit is ready for harvest you get the yellow orange or orange red fruit. By the time fall hits the leaves also turn yellow, orange or red. This fruit is rich in Vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and vitamin E, as well as manganese, magnesium, potassium,  copper, phosphorous and fiber.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

In order to increase your seed germination rate, you first have to put the seeds through cold treatment. This process called stratification helps to bring the seeds out of the dormancy stage. It involves putting the seeds in the ziploc bag or glass jar with some moist sand or peat in late fall or early winter. Store them in your fridge for at least three months and make sure to keep them moist at all times.

After the first stage, you can move on to planting seeds in peat pellets in seedling trays or cake pans. The pellets are soaked in water before the seeds are pressed in about an inch deep. The seeds require humid conditions and this can be achieved by covering with a clear plastic bag for the germination period which should take about 21 days. The seedlings will be ready to be transferred to the small pots at about 3 inches long, then left to grow and make sure to harden them before transplanting into your garden.
