When I first started gardening, I thought that everything needed to be grown from seeds. Boy was I wrong. I have since discovered how to grow curry leaf from cuttings and how to grow basil from cuttings. I already shared how to grow dragon fruit from seeds, however today we will be looking at how to grow dragon fruit from cuttings.
Dragon fruit is also known as Pitaya, or scientifically as Genus Hylocereus. Did you know that there are actually quite a few different species of cactii, that produce this fruit? So the question that is probably on your mind right now, is why grow it from cuttings instead of seeds? Well the answer is simple, cactii grown from seed take longer to fruit and often die off. A cutting cactus, can produce fruit in as few as five to six months.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- dragon fruit cactus cuttings
- fungicidal rooting hormone
- container
- potting soil
- wooden dowel
- sharp knife
Obviously you are going to need an established cactus, for you to cut your cutting from in order for this to work. The cutting should not be less than 6 inches long or more than 15 inches long. The diagonal cut you make across your cutting, is important for exposing as much of the surface area as possible so that the roots can grow. Don’t forget to apply the rooting hormone.
