Yep! Get ready to be introduced to yet another new exotic fruit. Honestly, why should we be restricted to the traditional fruits when there is so many out there to be enjoyed. Remember, we looked at how to grow starfruit, how to grow custard apples and even how to grow kiwi fruit in previous posts. Moving on, today we will take a quick look how to grow cocktail kiwis.
Cocktail kiwis, are also known as mini kiwis, Actinidia arguta or the hardy kiwi. Although they look like the popular kiwifruit, they are actually native to Japan, Korea, Northern China as well as Siberia. They grow in small bunches, that look like grapes. As for the taste they tend to be less acidic, softer and sweeter. Did you know that there are over 90 different species of kiwis? Neither did I. Wow.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- cocktail kiwi seeds or seedlings
- compost
- mulch
- orgarnic fertilizer
- trellis
You are welcome to try growing your cocktail fruit from seed. The process is similar to how you would germinate seeds for the common kiwi. Germination can take up to 28 days. I have posted a video below, to guide you through that whole process. The easier and less challenging route is to just buy a young plant from a local nursery or online. Alternatively, you could also try propagating from cuttings.
The plant will do well in a location that gets a lot of sunshine. Generally since this fruit originated in the colder regions, it can withstand the colder winter temperatures of up to -34 degrees F. To encourage growth, regular pruning is recommended especially during summer. A trellis to provide support, should also be considered. It will take about 3 years before your plant starts producing fruit and you can expect as much as 400 mini kiwis per vine at full production
