Did you honestly think that summer would end, without me mentioning another pepper on this blog. LOL. You should already know how to grow peppers, how to grow habanero peppers and even how to grow poblano peppers in your garden. But, have you ever tried growing banana peppers? Well, I have.
No they do not taste like bananas, the name is actually derived from their yellowish color when they are ready for harvest. I also found it interesting that there are sweet banana peppers as well as hot banana peppers. Although they are a few different varieties of both, they are all pretty much grown the same way. Select your favorite variety based on your preferences, order the seeds and let’s get planting.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- banana pepper seeds
- seedling trays
- seedling starter mix
- plant starter solution
- epsom salts (optional)
- compost
It is recommended that your seedlings indoors about 8 weeks before the last frost. Prep your seedling trays with the mix and plant your seeds in there. Keep the seedlings exposed to as much sunlight as possible, so they can grow and be ready for transplant when the soil has warmed up to an average of 60 degrees F.
When transplanting, so do in rows 2 to 3 feet apart. The plants should be at least a foot apart within the rows. Epsom salts maybe added if the soil is magnesium deficient. The soil should always be moist in order to promote rapid growth. Keep an eye out for aphids, beetles, caterpillars, maggots as well as earworms. The peppers are ready to harvest when the turn a yellowish color.
