So today I was craving some potato chips (don’t ask me why). I went to raid the kitchen cabinet, but alas we where all out. It was time for plan B, I have made hasselback potatoes before, it should not be too difficult to make homemade potato chips, right?
Well it turns out I was right, it is pretty easy to make some. Just a little more time consuming than rushing to the store to grab a packet. However, remember homemade is always better tasting and crispier. As for the ingredients, you most likely already have them most if not all of them in your kitchen. Great recipe from Laura.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- russet potatoes
- large bowl
- cold water
- chopping board
- kitchen towel
- deep frying pan
- vegetable oil
- kitchen thermometer
- spider
- paper towel
- salt
- air tight container
- mandolin (optional)
Step By Step Instructions
Step 1. Scrub your potatoes well, and you can either peel them
or not it is totally up to you.
Step 2. Cut your potatoes in half and then slice them very thinly
with a kitchen knife or your mandolin kitchen tool.
Step 3. Leave your potatoes in a bowl with cold water for 2 hours.
Drain the bowl and change the water after the first hour.
Step 4. Lay your potato slices on a layer of kitchen towel to
drain all the excess water. It is very important that they
are very dry, before you start to deep fry them.
Step 5. Heat the vegetable oil up to 325 degrees F, and then load
your potato slices into the pan in small batches, using the spider.
Step 6. Cook the slices until they turn a nice golden brown color
about 2 to 3 minutes per side. and then shake off as much of the
oil as possible to prevent them from getting soggy.
Step 7. Place them on paper towel lined plates, to drain any excess
oil that may have been left over from the pan.
Step 8. Sprinkle some salt on your chips, and you are done!
You can make different flavors by changing a few of the steps. For example for salt and vinegar, you would soak the chips in white vinegar in the last hour instead of water. For BBQ flavor you would take a large freezer bag or bowl (preferably one with a lid so you can shake it for easier coating) and combine paprika, onion powder, brown sugar, garlic powder, salt, and chili powder. Then you simply sprinkle this spice mixture on the chips, instead of the sea salt. Store in an air tight container or a large ziploc bag.
